Choosing what hairstyle to have for your wedding day can be quite daunting. There are so many different styles to choose from and having an updo isn’t something most people are used to having.
Look through lots of images to get some inspiration. Bridal magazines, fashion and celebrity magazines and Pinterest are all great places to start. Go to my Pinterest page to see some great inspirational images I have picked out.
If you have a particular theme to your wedding, your hair is a great opportunity to incorporate your style into the theme. For example, if your dress is very vintage, maybe something with a lot of lace, you could try a beautiful 1920’s inspired updo with a finger wave effect. Or if you’ve opted for a more bohemian style wedding you could choose a loose, textured hairstyle incorporating some boho braids.
Lashes are an important part of any eye make-up. Long luscious lashes can open up the eye and add definition, really finishing off an eye make-up look.
Curling your lashes before applying mascara helps to create the appearing of longer lashes. A lot of people’s lashes can grow quite straight and therefore even when mascara is applied to them, the lashes are still not that visible.
Mascara (waterproof for those weepy brides!) should be applied right to the root of the lashes. This makes the lashes appear thicker and enhances definition. Wiggle the mascara in the root of the lash and to the tip of the lashes in a zig-zag motion – repeat until happy! Concentrate on the outer corner lashes to really accentuate the shape.
On your wedding day, it is vital that your make-up stays looking fresh all day long. Well applied bridal make-up should only need a bit of powder and a lipstick touch up throughout the day – the rest should stay picture perfect all day long!
Skincare has an important part to play in long lasting make-up. A good quality moisturiser is key for a good skin base. Your moisturiser should hydrate your skin without being too greasy. My favourite moisturiser to use for brides with dry or sensitive skin is Embryolisse Lait-crème Concentrate Nourishing Moisturiser – It leaves the skin supple, smoothed, plumped and incredibly soft. For oily skin types I opt for Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel.
Primer is a must for make-up longevity. Primer creates the perfect base to apply makeup to. Not only will a primer help make you make-up last longer, but it will also smooth over fine lines and open pores. There are different primers for each skin type. I personally like the Smashbox Primer range, which includes primers that are oil free, colour correcting, illuminating and hydrating.

Bridal hairstyles featuring braids are some of my favourite. Braids are very versatile; they can add texture to a hairstyle, make a simple hairstyle more interesting, add structure and create intricacy. Delicate braids can be used in romantic, soft styles or you can add layers of messy, textured braids to create a really beautiful look. Braids look especially fantastic in the summer as they have an instantly fresh feel to them. There is also an abundance of different braids to choose from such as plaits, fishtail braids, French braids, dutch braids….the list goes on!
I personally like to use braids in a messy boho style updo. Using a great salt spray such as L’oreal’s Matt and Messy on ready tonged tousled curls will create great texture to the hair. Random plaits, twists and fishtails braids can then be created. Rubbing some mattifying volumising powder such as Schwarzkopf Got2be Powder’ful into the braids and pulling bit out and loosening them up can create even more fabulous texture. The hair can then be pinned up to create an amazingly intricate but effortlessly chic bohemian updo. Adding a few sprigs of baby’s breath into the hair can really finish off this kind of style and looks great for a summer wedding.
I cannot stress enough how essential your skincare routine is to achieve a flawless make-up application. No matter how good the make-up artist is, make-up that is applied to skin that hasn’t been properly cared for and prepped well will not look its best!
Everyone, whether you’re a bride to be or not, should keep a good skincare routine. This means cleansing, toning and moisturising morning and night!!
Make sure you are taking your make-up off thoroughly before you go to bed using a proper cleanser and not just a face-wipe. Your skin needs to be able to breathe and keeping on your make-up while you sleep only clogs pores causing spots and blackheads. (more…)
